Quit When You're winning

POSTED: 25 July 2014

It's always gratifying to learn of sports personalities calling it quits while they are on top of their respective fields.

Not so many belong to that kind and one of them is Philipp Lahm.

The day after Germany which he captained won the recent World Cup, Lahm bared his intention to hang his boots and jersey to coach Joachim Low, and the official announcement was made only a few days later.

The Battle Of Shanghai

POSTED: 25 July 2014

This week the search of the world domestic football scene brings me to China where I’m hoping to win some Dollars, or Yen, well any currency will be just fine!

So looking at the China Super League I note there’s a Shanghai derby match between Shanghai Shenhua and Shanghai Shenxin. People always say be wary of betting on derby matches as form often goes out of the window, I don’t think it’s that so much but more about what team wants the local pride more.

So looking at the sides Shenhua lie 10th in the table and Shenxin are 12th, with both sides only winning 4 of their 16 league games to date. What I also note is Shenhua have scored 18 goals, in comparison to only 12 that Shenxin have scored. I can also see that Shenhua have won the last 3 meetings between the sides.

So looking strictly at the stats, it would appear that so far this season Shenxin are struggling to find goals – which when it comes to a local derby is a danger, especially when in the last 3 games between the two they have not just lost, but they also have not scored. That would appear to me that Shenhua hold an advantage between the sides, which to me equals an opportunity to bet.

Pick – China Super League – Shenhua v Shenxin – Shenhua to win @ 1.875

Growth In The US

POSTED: 25 July 2014

This week I’m turning my sites to domestic leagues and with MLS steadily gaining ground, a Western conference clash between Colorado Rapids and Chivas USA should be a thrilling encounter.

Played at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, it is easy to see that the Colorado outfit will definitely have the advantage. However, it seems they are trying to fight for more as they are currently clinging on to the last qualifying spot in the West.

Tied with LA Galaxy on points with 27, Colorado had a chance to climb the rankings as high as second in the table with a win over Portland Timbers. However, things didn’t go their way and they lost 2-1 after allowing two goals in five minutes after already holding the lead for much of the contest.

This loss extended Colorado’s winless streak to three matches, and they have only won once in their last five across all competitions.

Meanwhile, Chivas’ slow start was erased when they pulled off four straight league wins to raise their points to 23. With a chance to possibly inch closer to the top 5 of the table, they faced DC United.

Things clearly didn’t go their way as they lost 3-1 with DC stringing three unanswered goals before Erick Torres’ consolation penalty kick in the 84th-minute. This halted their momentum and they will surely try to regain it by beating Colorado.

Already having met once in Denver – a match that resulted in a 3-1 victory for Chivas, it looks like they have no problem getting points despite coming in as visitors.

And with Dafabet paying a huge 4.59 for another Chivas win away from home, I may consider placing a decent wager for a big return. A Colorado win pays 1.68, while a draw is worth 3.75.

I’m going for a repeat of their past meeting, a Chivas victory that means I will have more money for beers!

Pick – Chivas USA win @ 4.59

Last week was a tight escape for me, if Lokeren succeeded in their late rally I would have been sent into another loss. Luckily, I went home with my bet intact, ready to wager it this week!

With most premier leagues still on vacation, only second to third tier leagues are in play, including the Swedish Allvenskan.

This week, I will bet on the match between Malmo FF and Kalmar.

Malmo are currently in control of the league, as their 34 points in 15 matches outpace any other teams, though they have clearly slowed down with only eight points on their last five fixtures.

Kalmar, are just three places away from Malmo with 27 points, but with only five points in their last five games they can be on a downward path from here if they cannot answer the slowly exposing problems of the club.

Only last week the pair met for the first time this season, and even though that match was intense, it ended without victors and both squads were left with only a share of the spoils.

Malmo got on an early lead in that match when Isaac Thelin scored 10 minutes after the opening whistle, but Mans Sodervquist’s goal in the 21st minute ensured both teams will go home with one point.

Dafabet favors Malmo for this match, giving punters a 1.59 payout with a Malmo win in 1x2, though I will ONCE AGAIN go for the handicap because I believe Malmo can bag this match 2-0, or even 3-0.

So here’s my weekly pick.

Pick: Malmo FF vs. Kalmar. -1.0 against Malmo, Malmo to win @2.00

One More Chance!

Although my trip up North did not pay off last week, I’m not willing to give up just yet. The choices are limited anyways since all major leagues have still not started so I will take my chances with the Swedish Allsvenskan again.

For this week I chose to splash some dough on the Mjallby vs IFK Goteborg match. The hosts are currently flirting with relegation at the 14th spot of the table with just 12 points in 15 games.

Their current form also does not give many promises for the imminent future as they have only managed to win once in their last five matches, having lost the other three and having drawn one.

Goteborg on the other hand run an amazing record as they now count 18 matches of being undefeated, across all competitions. In the last five they drew one and won the other four.

The two rivals are certainly no stranger to each other. Last time they met was only last week in Goteborg and Mikael Stahre’s squad was victorious with a 3-1 final score. Mjallby’s only goal in the match came from a penalty.

IFK Goteborg has another match lined up just two days before they travel to Hallevik as they face Gyori ETO in their UEFA Champions League campaign. Although one might argue that the said match will take its toll on the Swedish side, I seriously don’t think it will. Simply because the Swedes already have the ticket to the 3rd Qualifying Round in their pocket since they lead by 3-0 on aggregate.

Considering all the above and having decided to play it more safe this time, I will opt for the visiting side’s straight win, especially since the odds for it are quite decent with dafabet paying 1.76.

Pick – IFK Goteborg win @ 1.76
