Seeking Glory

Seeking Glory

The most interesting part of the match between Uruguay and Chile in the Copa America is that from an angle, it’s a battle between two sides with something to prove.

At one time or two, Uruguay was among the top football teams, with 2 World Cup titles from decades ago. Last year in South America they passed Brazil and Argentina to claim 4th place. For this team, returning to former glory is not impossible. And with Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan in their arsenal, it almost seems likely.

Chile, some say, is the competition’s dark horse. They reached the Round of 16 in last year’s World cup before that 6-1 lashing by Brazil. For these chaps, it’s proving that they can win on their own merit, and that losing Marcelo Bielsa is not a massive and contributing factor.

Head to head, Chile can put up a decent fight; they defeating Uruguay 2-0 in their last encounter. But in an important competition as the Copa America, I reckon Chile is still a bit vulnerable. This is not like the friendlies they did fairly well in under Claudio Borghi’s management. Against a strong and solid Uruguay team, these blokes might need a bit more than what they have now.

I’m not absolutely counting Chile out; if anyone will pull off an upset in this round, it could be them. But for this match, Uruguay I think has a bit more going for them.

Verdict: Uruguay win
